Velga (possibly from the Castilian word “embelga,” meaning small plot of land) is, in oral tradition, the name given to the small cultivated fields scattered across the slopes of Serra da Estrela, where potatoes were once planted and rye and corn were sown.
This year we are cultivating an idea.
We look at the village with the desire to inhabit it: with theater, music and contemporary circus. We aim to fill it with stories and new paths to explore. We want to use its streets, squares and halls transforming it into the stage for this occupation. To stir up the long summer days and the warm nights of August. To invite passersby and challenge onlookers. Here is what we have in store:
For the youngest the week begins early at the parish hall with the second edition of the miniLAB for performing arts, from August 15 to 19, for children up to 13 years old under the guidance of dancer Francisca Mantas Pinto.
On August 17, actress and director Catarina Requeijo opens the program with Muita Tralha, Pouca Tralha a cheerful journey full of issues to Batalha: to be seen in the late afternoon in front of CREV. After sunset, at the Ringue, the Porto-based company Erva Daninha presents RASTO, a contemporary circus show that depicts how all-terrain men seek balance, featuring acrobatics on a tractor. On August 18, Catarina Requeijo returns with Memórias de uma Falsificadora, telling the story of Margarida Tengarrinha and the clandestine life of her and many other women during the Estado Novo period.
Throughout these days there will be sofas to sit on, admire and listen to. This is a creation by the theater company Amarelo Silvestre from Canas de Senhorim, with Lígia Soares, offering an invitation to pause and listen. If you find them, dare to lie down and hear what they have to tell you.
To the sound of the viola campaniça, together with O Gajo, we dive into the roots of Portuguese music and resurface with reinvented sounds. This takes place on the night of August 19 in the garden of the Igreja Velha.
On Saturday, August 20, in a day co-organized with the Vallecinus Association, the invitation is to rise early and take a walk. The route covers several important parts of the village and other walking trails. In the afternoon there is entertainment at the pool for children and a cooking show in Salão Paroquial for adults. In the evening we welcome Rui Paixão (former Cirque du Soleil artist) and his clown Albano, in an exploration of the fear of ridicule and how to laugh at discomfort. After that the sound will rise in volume at the hands of local DJs, DJ Steven and DJ Boozye, who promise to close this edition of Ocupar a Velga with lots of electronic beats.
We invite the hesitant and the curious, the enthusiasts and the shy, the locals, the neighbors and those from afar. The seeds have been sown. This year, we are cultivating an idea. And the idea is to continue!
